CANADA: Take Action for Indigenous Rights and to Protect Water! June 2 and 9 in YOUR Church!

If you live in Canada, you and your church community can be part of a very simple, brief act of solidarity on June 2 or 9! On those days, KAIROS Canada (an ecumenical coalition to which our sister organization, the Disciples Centre for Public Witness, belongs) is taking action for right relations with Indigenous peoples and to help protect Canada’s waters from recent changes in environmental legislation — and they’re asking YOU to join them!

In late 2012, Indigenous peoples in Canada asked Canadians to enter into right relationship and to awaken ourselves to the impact of legislation (in omnibus budget bills C-38 and C-45) that will weaken the protection of our environment and change our relationship with Indigenous peoples.  For more information on the impacts of Bills C-38 and C-45 and other ways to participate in this campaign (including writing a letter to your MP and plans for larger community events), please visit  the Our Waters, Our Life campaign page.

Solidarity Action
On Sunday, June 2 or 9th we are asking you to:
  • Gather a small bottle of water from your local water source.
  • Label it with the name of the water source, the name of the Indigenous traditional territory if you know it, and the name of your community
  • Dedicate the water at a regular worship service by reading the prayer on this bulletin insert.
  • Mail the water by June 11 to the Ottawa office:

Ed Bianchi
KAIROS: Canadian Ecumenical Justice Initiatives
211 Bronson Ave, Suite 211
Ottawa, Ontario
K1R 6H5

Please email Ed Bianchi at ebianchi@kairoscanada.org to let us know that you will be sending some water.  This will help us plan the national “Gathering of the Waters” action in Ottawa on June 20.  Your water will be used in a collective action so that your voices, your watershed and the Indigenous traditional territory where you live are represented physically and spiritually.

Thank you for your solidarity with Indigenous peoples for the sake of our water.
